Yolotli is Tlazopilli’s wife and spends most of her time taking care of her children. Unbeknownst to her husband, she is an activist and a revolutionary she fears for her son and daughter predestined futures in an unforgiving society and will be a spark for things to come as she passes her progressive ideas on to her daughter Citlalin.
Yolotli has to be careful to secretly spread her knowledge because she is expecting a child. She respects and loves her husband but she knows Tlazopilli is bound by his honor and centuries old traditions. Yolotli learns that her daughter is in love with a young conquistador and reluctantly helps her daughter escape with him since she knows that Citlalin is doomed should she stay in Tenochtitlan, since her daughter’s birth secret is in danger to be exposed on each passing day.
